2018 Communications Academy

Spokane County ARES-RACES had four members attend the 20th Anniversary Communications Academy held in Seattle Washington April 14 and 15.  They attended sessions and heard from keynote speakers on topics including proposed ARRL changes to ARES member qualificatons, after actions reports from Puerto Rico after hurricane Maria, and more.  The team felt it was a worthwhile trip and will consider attending again next year.

ARES Amateur Workshop - Digital Training and More

The second-Saturday Digital Workshop is changing.  The first change is moving the training from the Spokane County Fire Training Center, to the Spokane County DEM Building at 1121 W. Gardner Ave, Spokane, WA 99260.  The next change is in what is covered.  Previously, the workshop has focused primarily on digital comunications using Winlink.  Now that we have several people familiar with Winlink, the group will be expanding the topics covered, -and- include non-digital topics such as antenna theory, how to build an HF station and more.

Anyone interested in various topics related to Amateur radio and how they fit in the ARES architecture are invited to attend.  We will continue to have specific topics to cover and might break the workshop into more than one group as the need arises to provide more focused attention on different topics.  If a new topic comes up during a workshop, we will look to put it on a later agenda.

The April 14th workshop will take a look at the new Winlink formats of ARDOP and VARA that look promising as Winmor replacements.  Watch for more detailed announcements through the Groups.io emails.

Hawaii ARES/RACES - Hams to the Rescue

During a recent accidental Missile Warning in the U.S.A state of Hawaii, a reporter was there to do a special interest piece on Amateur radio operators.  What they really learned was more about professional communicators working as a backup system to authorities when other means of "getting the word out" might fail.
